Real-time Satellite Images

fun stuff !

Ask a scientist ...

Do you have a program that I can use for security on my property?
To monitor a given location by satellite over a 24-hour period would require using a geostationary satellite (it follows the rotation of the earth). Although these satellites take many snapshots of the earth, they take them at a frequency too low to be used for security purposes (for example, it may be 30 minutes between images). Also, the spatial resolution (the pixel size) is rather large since the satellites are so far from the earth. So the images look fuzzy when you start to zoom in on a house. The particular satellites that we deal with in our group are called polar orbiting satellites - they orbit the earth from pole to pole and only see a given location twice a day. The best way to monitor property for security purposes is to use a security camera.
