Real-time Satellite Images

fun stuff !

Ask a scientist ...

Why are the images blurry when I zoom in?
Unlike Google Earth, which offers aircraft photos taken from a height of half a kilometer in places, the satellite images shown here were taken from 705 km above the earth. Hence our satellite images are lower in resolution than other images you may have seen. However, the advantage of MODIS images over Google Earth images is that they are near real-time. You can see current weather patterns, snow deposits, smoke from fires, ocean phytoplankton blooms, etc.
